Gabby Young And Other Animals – New Single & UK Tour

unnamed

On November 30 Gabby Young & Other Animals release the stunning new single, ‘Fear Of Flying,’ the latest offering from the critically acclaimed album, ‘One Foot In Front of the Other,’ released earlier this year.

‘Fear of Flying is a personal favourite,’ says Gabby. ‘It’s about being so fiercely independent I refused to let people get involved in my career and life, but I am so thankful I got over that and let people in. Those people have made my life so much better. They help me conquer my fears, which I have too many of – including the fear that I might be scared of flying, which is crazy.

A hands-down classic in the same vein as Gabby’s ‘We’re All In This Together’ – a fan favourite from her 2010 debut album, ‘Fear of Flying’ is one of the album’s more simple songs. However armed with a beautiful melody and Gabby’s delicate vocals, the song slowly builds with the help of some clever percussion into a soaring torch song, becoming perhaps one the finest moments of her career so far.

And don’t miss the accompanying video, simple and beautiful as the song itself, with Gabby adorned in feathers and frills, singing from a giant bird’s nest…

The album ‘One Foot In Front of The Other’ was released earlier this year to critical acclaim. Following two previous albums, both equally lauded, Gabby Young & Other Animals continue to push boundaries winning over press and fans alike, with praise everywhere from The Guardian Financial Times, The Metro, The Independent, to The Sunday Times, Evening Standard and Daily Mirror.

She also continues to wow with her breathtaking live shows, with a huge following across Europe, Gabby’s spent the summer touring continuously, and now finally returns to the UK & Ireland for three shows throughout November:

Fri 21 November – Dundee Jazz Festival

Mon 24 November – National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland

Thurs 27 November – Oslo, Hackney, London

Gabby Young and Other Animals Make Music Week Playlist with ‘I’ve Improved’

The eclectic folk of Gabby Young and Other Animals has made the Music Week Top 10 playlist for their latest single ‘I’ve Improved’, taken from the eagerly anticipated third album ‘One Foot In Front Of The Other’.

Both of our previous albums have been so well received by critics and fans alike’ says Gabby. ‘I really hope this one achieves the same reaction. I see the three of them as a collective, but there’s something about this one – I’ve fallen in love with every song on it’.

The lead single ‘I’ve Improved’ is out April 14th. ‘One Foot In Front Of The Other’ is out April 28th.

Previous praise:

She has the power, clarity and precision of an opera diva” 4*s The Guardian

Gabby Young is distinctive” MOJO

A sense of a second-hand jumble worked up into something vital and new is matched in the tapestry of their sound.” THE SUNDAY TIMES

On the 28th April 2014, the exquisite Gabby Young & Other Animals return, with their anticipated third album, ‘One Foot In Front of The Other’ out on Gift of the Gab Records.

One Foot In Front of the Other’ still covers the musical styles her fans will be accustomed to, and like her previous two albums, continues to defy labels, effortlessly moving between moments of jazz, opera, folk and cabaret. However, the production has never sounded better – overflowing with lush instrumentation it feels like her most polished work to date, thanks to stellar production by fellow Animal Stephen Ellis, engineered by Dave Moore (The Laurel Collective/ Empirical) Jake Gordon (Naughty Boy/Professor Green).

The songs are very personal. There are some things I’m singing about here I wouldn’t talk about to my closest friends, which I know is silly, as I’m telling everyone…’

There are too many highlights, including the haunting seascape ‘Another Ship,’ an epic lament on longing to go home – featuring keys from Bill Laurence (from 2014 Grammy winning band Snarky Puppy). Then there’s the perfect love song ‘Saviour’ written with and about partner and producer, Stephen Ellis, followed by the ever pretty ‘Smile,’ showcasing Gabby’s continually impressive vocal range over ukulele, toy piano and muted drums, a song she’s confident sums up her whole goal in life. ‘I want to make everyone smile, it’s the main reason I write songs and perform, so this is a pinnacle song for me.’

I never want to write purely sad music,’ says Gabby. ‘All my songs have to have hope in them. With this album I’d written the majority and realised it was mainly downbeat. But I always strive for the right amount of light and shade, so I worked on adding more upbeat songs.’

So fear not, the ‘circus swing’ (Clive Anderson BBC Radio 2) moments are still here, with the Animal’s brass section still being put through their paces. There’s the infectious ‘I’ve Improved,’ the vibrant first single out 24 February, written after a moment of enlightenment on the band’s Middle Eastern tour, plus tracks like the Balkan-flavoured ‘Time’ and ‘The Devil Has Moved In’ both complete with wild trumpets, keys and percussion aplomb.

One Foot In Front of The Other’ is the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2012 album, ‘The Band Called Out For More.’ This saw Gabby featured everywhere from The Metro and The Independent, to a page interview and 4-star review in The Sun’s Something For The Weekend, with further 4-star reviews in the likes of The Guardian, FT and Mirror. The band’s first album, ‘We’re All In This Together’ was equally as lauded. On its release in 2010 it won over most of the UK’s major newspapers, including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and the Evening Standard.

I just really hope our fans will connect with it in the same way. The ones that have got to know us since the beginning, and have supported us throughout, they’re the ones we really want to reach.’

MOYA

2012 was a big year for 21 year old Moya. She started the year with a beautiful cover of  ‘I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have’ and ended it with ‘Making Me Fall’  – A Listed for 3 weeks on BBC Radio 2.  Hailed by Perez Hilton as “A female Bruno Mars,” tipped by Fearne Cotton on her Radio One show and described as “Provocative, stylish and sassy” by The Daily Mirror – we’re expecting big things for Moya in 2013. Her stunning new single ‘A Little More Love’  is due out early next year, but in the mean time here’s ‘Making Me Fall’

DARYL HALL AND RUMER

Our round up of 2012 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the legend that is Daryl Hall. A real return to form this year with his brand new studio album, ‘Laughing Down Crying,’ which won him praise everywhere from the Telegraph, Times and Q Magazine. There was the sold out gig at Shepherd’s Bush too, which featured guest appearances from both KT Tunstall and Rumer. The latter of which also appeared on Daryl’s now famous ‘Live From Daryl’s House. Here’ s our favourite from that session, Daryl and Rumer singing Hall & Oates classic, ‘Can’t Go For That.’

ANJA MCCLOSKEY

We’ve worked with Anja throughout the year, and pleased to see her music finally getting the recognition it deserves. Q likened her to “A Romany gypsy cabaret show” whilst This Is Fake DIY was “Taken aback by the sheer level of beauty.” It’s hard to pick a favourite from Anja, but we’d suggest starting with the lovely ‘Italian Song’:

Another One to Watch for 2013, Scarlette Fever’s debut single ‘Crash & Burn’ hit the BBC Radio 2’s B-list last year in the UK, and reached #2 on the Billboard Breakout Club Chart in the USA. This year she followed it with another Radio 2 B-list for widescreen ballad ‘Elated,’ along with national press acclaim.  She’s currently in the studio recording new material with Julian Emery (Lissie, McFly, Newton Faulkner) and has spent the latter half of this year performing, writing and recording in the US.

‘Walk Away’ Gabby’s first song written on piano, builds to a celebratory horn-infused climax: ‘I woke up one morning at 6am,’ she says, ‘and this came out, lyrics and all, in 5 minutes. It was something I really needed to say to my Dad.’

The heart-wrenching new video is directed by Gabby’s partner and producer, Stephen Ellis. Filmed on location in the depths of Hampstead Heath, the video features Gabby’s actual father, Edward, alongside a captivating performance from Gabby. “I wanted to make a real and emotional video,” says Gabby. “This song is a message for my Dad and I am so pleased that he could be in it. I found the whole experience of shooting and now watching it back very moving.”

Walk Away is out October 1.
