KA and GRM Daily enjoyed a hugely successful first year of the KA Rated Awards on 17 September in central London. The best and brightest stars in British urban music turned out to Gracepoint in Islington for a night celebrating urban talent and awarding some of the best projects, artists and songs of the year.
Performing; Little Simz, Ghetts, Section Boyz, WSTRN and Bonkaz all impressed the 900 strong audience, plus a surprise performance from Giggs, before Kano closed the awards performing a selection of career spanning tracks, with a little help from Ghetts.
Winners on the night were Krept & Konan who won Best Project for The Long Way Home, Bugzy Malone who won Best Breakthrough, and Skepta won Best Track for 2015 anthem Shutdown, and the coveted Artist of the Year.
Other winners include Diztortion who won Producer of the Year, Big Narstie for Personality of the Year, Stormzy won with Know Me From for Best Video, and 1Xtra’s Charlie Sloth took away the prize for Best DJ
The winner of the KA Get Rated Award was Jevon. This award is in relation to the ‘Get Rated’ artist competition run by KA & GRM Daily this year. It offered entrants the opportunity to ‘Get Seen, Get Heard and Get Rated.
Legendary grime MC Kano won the industry-voted GRM Legacy Award, recognised for his contribution to urban music over the past decade.
Organiser Phil Kemish from Disrupt: “It felt like a pivotal moment in Grime. Having the scene come together to celebrate how far it’s come and award the amazing talent in the UK. From pioneers like So Solid to up and coming acts like Section Boyz, the night shows grime has grown up and it’s here to stay.”
