IN YOUR HEAD
MALE VERSION OF ME
WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER
ONES THAT GOT AWAY
The Apple Store is rather an unlikely venue for an atmospheric gig, but the former Gardening Club (RIP) building in Covent Garden boasts an attractive pillared performance space, complete with mezzanine area.
Last Thursday the store was packed with both Gabby fans and curious onlookers alike. Despite warnings to keep the sound down, Gabby and her animal chums let rip as much as you can in what is, let’s not forget, a glorified computer shop.
Gabby, resplendent in red bob wig, kept the crowd rapt throughout, unleashing a short set that combined live favourites with a handful of tracks from forthcoming album ‘The Band Called Out For More’ (Out June 11).
New single ‘In Your Head,’ which captures something of the spirit of Gabby’s earlier material, proved a riotous opener, before two of our current faves, the catchy horn-infused ‘Walk Away,’ and the excellent accordian-tinged ‘Male Version Of Me.’
Gabby’s partner and guitarist Stephen introduced hoedown number ‘Horatio’ with an impressive attempt at audience participation (which you can imagine works brilliantly in a boozy environment), before the band finished with two highlights from the first album, including title track ‘We’re All In This Together,’ a grower of a record that has real legs; we think it deserves a shot at the big time again soon.
Our verdict? A great little comeback gig.
If you missed the Apple Store, the next live date by Gabby Young & Other Animals is at the BBC Club on Monday April 16. It’s invite only so drop us a line if you’d like to attend: firstname.lastname@example.org
